I consider EC a combo guard. He has the handles to be a point guard, and he is also a above average shooter. He has decided to continue his college career at Rhode Island next year, and what a special treat it will be for the Rams.
Interview with Wes Clark
25 DecMissouri commit Wes Clark does more than just score, he is a lockdown defender. Against Community, Wes did not put up the offensive we are used to seeing from him, but he played with passion on the defensive end. He is well off on his way toward having a successful senior season.
Interview with Miroslav Jaksic
24 DecMiroslav Jaksic is a center on Walled Lake Western who has completely dominated some games this year. He is a big man who is not slow for his size and has some nice athleticism.
Interview with Mychal Mulder
24 DecMychal Mulder is small forward who has all of the skills to achieve at the next level. He can shoot, dribble, and defend. A true playmaker.
Romulus Classic Day Two Recaps
24 DecThe second day of the Romulus Holiday Hoops Classic proved to be another day of exciting high school basketball.
Detroit Catholic Central 60 vs. Ypsilanti Lincoln 41– The Lincoln Railsplitters stood no match for the defending Catholic League champions, CC. CC took advantage of many Railsplitters mistakes and led comfortably throughout the entire second half. Mitch Katkic scored 17 for the Shamrocks.
Gibraltar Carlson 58 vs. Belleville 41– The Tigers of Belleville have some pretty talented athletes. But Carlson proved to be the much tougher team. A ballgame where both offenses struggled in the first quarter, the play of senior Daton Aaron for Carlson proved to be the difference. He is a magician with the ball in his hand, and when you pair him up with big man Kaylyn Erwin, you have a dangerous combination. Aaron finished up with 18 points for Carlson.
Ontario CC 51 vs. Ann Arbor Skyline 44– Mychal Mulder proved to be an all around player for CC today, he scored 11, got 12 rebound, and recorded four blocks. This game was not the prettiest of games but still proved to be an interesting one. CC pushed their lead out to double digits a couple of times, but in the third was when Skyline made their comeback. Down only two at 34-32 at the beginning of the 4th, Skyline would not give up. But in the end, Skyline made some key turnovers, resulting in the loss.
Toledo Rogers 73 vs. Chandler Park Academy 78– The defending Toledo City League champions Rogers took their show north of the Ohio Border to take on Michigan commit Derrick Walton Jr. and the Chandler Park Eagles. The Eagles went on a 8-2 run in the first three minutes of the ball game, and ended up taking a 20-14 lead after run. It looked like as if Chandler Park was about to blow the Rams out early. Not so fast, this is when Bethune-Cookman signee Clemmye Owens V took over, hitting some crucial threes and somewhat slowing down Walton and the Eagles to go down only seven at half. Things got interesting in the fourth, Rogers was able to take a lead by one with about 1:40 left. But the Eagles saved their best for last, Walton hit all his three throws down the stretch to preserve the victory. Walton finished up with 38 points, eight assists, nine rebounds, and five steals.
Detroit Southeastern 60 vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer 62– Pioneer pulled of the upset over DPS power Southeastern. Jibreel Hussein added 24 points and Tevis Robinson scored 12. Jump shooting killed Southeastern in this game. Most of their points came in the paint, they need to become a more balanced team if they wish to compete in the city this year.
Detroit Douglass 54 vs. Romulus 77– The final game of the classic turned out the same way the previous nights final game did, a convincing win for the Romulus Eagles. This one started out like it would be all Eagles, jumping out to a 14-4 run midway through the first and a 27-14 lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, Douglass jr. guard Darrell Davis went out with an injury resulting in the flow of the Hurrican offense to diminish. However, the Hurricanes were only down by five at the half. Romulus gained a double digit lead at the end of three and sailed the rest of the way to 23 point advantage. 12 different players on the Eagles scored. EC Matthews scored 17, while senior Jalon Plummer added 16, and Wes Clark contributed 14 points in the winning effort.
Romulus Day One Recaps
24 DecThe Romulus Holiday Hoops Classic turned out to be a great two day event. Here are some of the results of the games on the first day.
River Rouge 68 vs. Cody 62– Jr. Terrell Crawford scored 22 points against Cody. A name to remember for the future.
Ford 69 vs. Pontiac 60– Senior point guard Dijon Cogdill added 26 points for Pontiac. Jarod Jones also added some highlight dunks for Pontiac.
Walled Lake Western 54 vs. Southfield Christian 48– The defending Class D champions were not able to get the w against Walled Lake and their big Miroslav Jaskic. The center scored 13 for Walled Lake, while Demarcus Bailey, a sophomore, tallied 15. For the Eagles, Bakari Evelyn scored 14 points, but four of those were in the second half. Demarco White added 14 for the Eagles as well.
Romulus 70 vs. Detroit Community 53– Multiple division one recruits took the floor in the spotlight game at Romulus’ Holiday Hoop Classic on Friday. This game seemed relatively competitive throughout a good portion of the first half. The score at the end of one was 15-13 Romulus . But in the second quarter, things started to get away for Community. This was where South Florida commit, Bo Zeigler, started to get in foul trouble. Resulting in him have to sit the bench throughout most of the quarter. While the superstar was on the bench, Romulus extended their lead to 42-28 at halftime. In the second half, more of the same for Romulus. When you have one of the best finishers in the state, EC Matthews, coming downhill at you, it is over. Not to mention his partner-in-crime, Missouri bound Wes Clark. That is the formula for Romulus extending their lead to 55-37 with 2:52 left in the third. But Community would not go away. Making it a 57-51 ballgame at the end of three. Romulus would not worry, they would extend their lead to 70-53 to hold onto the victory. EC Matthews scored 16 points, Leo Edwards added 16 as well. Senior Jalon Plummer added ten points, and held Zeigler to only 6 points.
Romulus’ Holiday Winner’s Circle Classic 2012
20 DecThis Friday and Saturday, the Romulus Eagles will host their annual Christmas Showcase with some of the area’s top teams participating. Here is the schedule for the event:
Friday: 3pm-Windsor CC vs. Detroit Western; 4:40pm-Detroit Cody vs. River Rouge; 6:20pm-Detroit Henry Ford vs. Pontiac; 8pm-Walled Lake Western vs. Southfield Christian; 9:40pm-Romulus vs. Detroit Community
Saturday: 1pm-Novi CC vs. Ypsilanti Lincoln, 2:40pm-Gibraltor Carlson vs. Belleville; 4:20pm-Ann Arbor Skyline vs. Windsor CC; 6pm-Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy vs. Toledo Rogers, 7:40pm-Detroit Southeastern vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer; 9:20pm-Romulus vs. Detroit Douglass
There are a couple of games that intrigue me. One of them is the Romulus vs. Community game. Romulus has several kids who are committed to play division one college basketball including, Rhode Island commit EC Matthews, Wes Clark who has committed to Missouri, and Leo Edwards a Louisiana Tech commit. Also from the Eagles, watch jr. guard Juwan Clark and senior guards Lowell Wade and Jalon Plummer. Community has South Florida commit Bo Zeigler, and not to mention a name to remember for the future, Jerrell Martin a forward.
On day two, once again, the Eagles square up against another one of the state’s top teams, this time being Detroit Douglass. On the Hurricanes is a class of 2014 standout, Darrell Davis who is regarded to be one of the top players in not only the DPS, but the State of Michigan.
Should be a great two day event at Romulus, top teams going at it against each other, what else could a high school basketball fan ask for?
Predictions for Detroit Public Schools League Basketball
20 DecThe Detroit PSL basketball league portion of the schedule opened up on Tuesday, and this year looks to be once again another competitive year within the DPS. The league sports many of the state’s top ranked teams, as well as some teams that could surprise us come playoff time. There are two divisions in the DPS, the East Division and the West Division. Between the two divisions, the East is completely stacked this year. Teams like Douglass, Southeastern, Pershing, and East English Village all carry players that are holding offers and gaining interest from some of the country’s best college basketball programs. On the flip side, the West may only have one or two teams that can compete for a city title, however, more teams in that division are unknown at this point in the season. For example, Western has always been a doormat in the league but this year things could be different for the Cowboys. With that being said, this ought to be one exciting season.
East Division
(1.) Pershing (2.) Douglass (3.) Southeastern (4.) East English Village (5.) King (6.) Osborn (7.) Denby (8.) Central (9.) Davis
West Division
(1.) Cass Tech (2.) Renaissance (3.) Cody (4.) Western (5.) Ford (6.) Mumford (7.)Northwestern (8.) CMA (9.) Westside
Players to Watch
Jaylen Bufford- Denby, Darrell Davis- Douglass, Alex Burney- Osborn, Kenyatta Singleton- Southeastern, D’Cari Charleston- Southeastern, Justin Tillman- Pershing, Martez Walker- Pershing, Darsean Woodson- Pershing, Khalil Felder- Pershing, Armani Lee- King, Marqywell Jackson- East English Village, Antoine Benford- East English Village, Kenny Carpenter- Cass Tech, D’Andre Johnson- Cass Tech, Kyle Steward- Cass Tech, Deangelo Stewart- Cass Tech, Joshua Davis- Ford, Romondo Ray- Western, Clark Bishop- Renaissance
Interview with Eric Davis of Saginaw Arthur Hill
16 DecEric Davis is a sophomore at Saginaw Arthur Hill, who is one of the top guards in the class of 2015, evident by the fact that schools like Kentucky and MSU are already showing interest. Eric can flat-out score the ball, but his bread and ball are his shooting abilities. If he fills out his 6’3″ body, and becomes more aggressive with his driving game, this kid will absolutely receive attention from the top programs in the country.
Results of Metro Detroit/Saginaw Valley League Challenge
16 DecFlint Northern: 71 West Bloomfield 67- Raymond Lewis scored 18 for the Northern Vikings.
Gibraltar Carlson 70 Saginaw Buena Vista 53- Jr. guard Jared Henson totaled 23 for the Marauders.
Ypsilanti 52 North Farmington 32- The Phoenix recieved good guard play from freshman Corey Allen. The front line of Ypsilanti caused problems all game for the Raiders. Led by LaVonte Davis’ 18 points.
Ann Arbor Huron 92 Taylor Truman 68- Jr. Point Guard Antonio Henry scored 17 for Huron, while jr. Aaron Foster-Smith added 27 in the losing effort for Truman.
Saginaw Arthur Hill 77 Detroit King 67- Only leading by two going into halftime, Arthur Hill would come out fast to start the second-half, which was started by a highlight dunk by senior wing Jalen Adams. King would make things interesting in the 4th, but in the end, sophomore sensation Eric Davis put Arthur Hill on his back. Going for 30 points in capturing the game MVP. Adams had 19 points.
Saginaw 57 Southeastern 56- The battle of two top ten ranked teams in the state proved to be one of the best games I have ever been to. Southeastern had the Trojans on the ropes throughout the entire first half, building a 31-19 lead going into the lockers, in large part due to the big men of the Jungaleers, causing problems on the offensive boards for Saginaw. Never count out a champion, the defending Class A champions, Saginaw, would pick up the defensive intensity in the second. Keon Addison proved to be the playmaker the Trojans would need, being a defensive leader for Saginaw, as well as putting up 15. Markell Bradshaw and Julian Henderson both added 14 for the Trojans.
