Romulus Classic Day Two Recaps

24 Dec

The second day of the Romulus Holiday Hoops Classic proved to be another day of exciting high school basketball.

Detroit Catholic Central 60 vs. Ypsilanti Lincoln 41– The Lincoln Railsplitters stood no match for the defending Catholic League champions, CC.  CC took advantage of many Railsplitters mistakes and led comfortably throughout the entire second half.  Mitch Katkic scored 17 for the Shamrocks.

Gibraltar Carlson 58 vs. Belleville 41– The Tigers of Belleville have some pretty talented  athletes.  But Carlson proved to be the much tougher team.  A ballgame where both offenses struggled in the first quarter, the play of senior Daton Aaron for Carlson proved to be the difference.  He is a magician with the ball in his hand, and when you pair him up with big man Kaylyn Erwin, you have a dangerous combination.  Aaron finished up with 18 points for Carlson.

Ontario CC 51 vs. Ann Arbor Skyline 44– Mychal Mulder proved to be an all around player for CC today, he scored 11, got 12 rebound, and recorded four blocks.  This game was not the prettiest of games but still proved to be an interesting one.  CC pushed their lead out to double digits a couple of times, but in the third was when Skyline made their comeback.  Down only two at 34-32 at the beginning of the 4th, Skyline would not give up.  But in the end, Skyline made some key turnovers, resulting in the loss.

Toledo Rogers 73 vs. Chandler Park Academy 78– The defending Toledo City League champions Rogers took their show north of the Ohio Border to take on Michigan commit Derrick Walton Jr. and the Chandler Park Eagles.  The Eagles went on a 8-2 run in the first three minutes of the ball game, and ended up taking a 20-14 lead after run.  It looked like as if Chandler Park was about to blow the Rams out early.  Not so fast, this is when Bethune-Cookman signee Clemmye Owens V took over, hitting some crucial threes and somewhat slowing down Walton and the Eagles to go down only seven at half.  Things got interesting in the fourth, Rogers was able to take a lead by one with about 1:40 left.  But the Eagles saved their best for last, Walton hit all his three throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.  Walton finished up with 38 points, eight assists, nine rebounds, and five steals.

Detroit Southeastern 60 vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer 62– Pioneer pulled of the upset over DPS power Southeastern.  Jibreel Hussein added 24 points and  Tevis Robinson scored 12.  Jump shooting killed Southeastern in this game.  Most of their points came in the paint, they need to become a more balanced team if they wish to compete in the city this year.

Detroit Douglass 54 vs. Romulus 77– The final game of the classic turned out the same way the previous nights final game did, a convincing win for the Romulus Eagles.  This one started out like it would be all Eagles, jumping out to a 14-4 run midway through the first and a 27-14 lead at the end of one.  In the second quarter, Douglass jr. guard Darrell Davis went out with an injury resulting in the flow of the Hurrican offense to diminish.  However, the Hurricanes were only down by five at the half.  Romulus gained a double digit lead at the end of three and sailed the rest of the way to 23 point advantage.  12 different players on the Eagles scored.  EC Matthews scored 17, while senior Jalon Plummer added 16, and Wes Clark contributed 14 points in the winning effort.
