Interview with Markell Bradshaw

18 Mar

IMG_1001Markell is a 6’1″ 160 pound senior point guard for the Saginaw Trojans.  Markell is an experienced, smart, tough point guard who does not receive the credit he deserves.  People know about Jerry Smith and Algevon Eichelberger, but tend to forget about Bradshaw.  Markell would be a star at any other school because of the talent that Saginaw has.  Markell is also a very smart student, carrying a 3.88 GPA and a 21 on the ACT.  Markell right now has visited Eastern Michigan and has been getting heavy interest from Coppin State.  Markell would be a solid low major D1 prospect.  Strengths include quickness, range on jump shot, overall passing ability, and penetrating ability.

Here is a link http://youtu.be/8nJqu9j3ij8 to Markell’s highlights so far this year.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What are your strengths as a basketball player?

Markell Bradshaw: I believe my strengths are my playmaking ability, court vision, penetration ability, range on jump shot, and running a team.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: How do you think the season has been going so far considering the fact you are three wins away from back to back Class A titles?

Markell Bradshaw: I believe it’s going great being able to have a chance to get another championship back to back.  This is a great accomplishment to have made it to the last eight standing.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What does it mean to be a Saginaw Trojan with all the tradition the basketball team has and playing in the historic Saginaw Valley League?

Markell Bradshaw: It is an honor to be a Trojan, just to wear the black and gold.  It is also a big challenge because it is so much pressure being a Trojan.  Expected to have a great season every year.  Playing in the league we play in is another big challenge.  It is difficult to beat everyone on their home floor with such good fans behind them.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: How fun is it playing on a team who might be the deepest talent wise in the State?

Markell Bradshaw: It is a lot of fun, especially playing the point guard sport.  I have so many options I can go to at any given time.  It also makes it easier for me to score or penetrate knowing that a team can’t just key in on mer or anybody else.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: You and your fellow backcourt mate Keyon Addison might be the quickest guard duo in the state, what is you guy’s relationship?

Markell Bradshaw: We have a great relationship.  We feed off each other very easily.  We get pumped up if I score or if he scores.  He helps me score, I help him score.  We also know each other’s strengths.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Now for you, what schools have shown interest in you and which ones are going at you the hardest?

Markell Bradshaw: Right now, I’m only receiving interest from Coppin State, but I plan to pick up some last-minute recruiting after the playoffs are over.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What would a school be getting from a player like you and what role would you prefer to take on for a team?

Markell Bradshaw: A school would get a hardworking player and a great academic student.  They also would get great leadership.  The role I would want to take on at a school would be a player just helping them reach the NCAA Tournament and win as many games as possible.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Do you think the fact that you are a Saginaw Trojan, schools will start to show interest in you?

Markell Bradshaw: I believe just playing on a dominant high school program like this may help me pick up more schools.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Any  shoutouts you would like to give?

Markell Bradshaw: I would like to shoutout my family, my basketball team, my coaching staff, and my lifelong basketball coach Alton Sanders.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What is a fun/interesting fact about you?

Markell Bradshaw: An interesting fact about me is that I was named Salutatorian (#2) 0f my graduating class about a month ago.

Interview with Quacker Valley’s Micah Glenn

11 Mar

IMG_0996

Imagine being comfortable at one of the most prestigious high schools in Michigan, but having to move to a whole new state.  That is what Quacker Valley High School (PA) guard Micah Glenn did.  Micah still put together a solid senior season this year.  While his offensive numbers are not through the rough, he made impacts on the game through his defense.  Something any coach in America would want on their team.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Please list weight, height, position and school.

Micah Glenn: 6’1″, 160 lbs, PG/SG, Quacker Valley High School.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Individual skills?

Micah Glenn: Shooting, ball handling, and defense.  Led my section in threes made this season and usually was put on one of the opposing teams best players.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Season stats?

Micah Glenn: 7 points per game, 2 assists per game, and 2 rebounds per game.  I started this year at La Jolla Prep, but that program went under so I transferred here in October.  Our top three scorers besides the returning starter are between 7-9 points per game, which includes me.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Things that you felt that you improved on over the season?

Micah Glenn: Shot selection and being a better off-ball defender.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: How hard was it for you to transition from a prestigious school in Michigan, Detroit Country Day, to a whole new state?

Micah Glenn: It was very hard.  I had been at DCD since 8th grade and had played against all the top players in Michigan my whole life, so it was different.  It felt like a step down at the time school wise and basketball.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Do you still talk to the seniors on the Country Day basketball team like Austin Price and Poet Thomas?

Micah Glenn: Yeah.  Austin Price is my cousin and were very close.  I come home whenever I have time off and I’m with him whenever that happens.  I’m good friends with Moe Ways and Mory (Diane) as well.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Do you feel as if it would have been better for you basketball wise to stay at DCD?

Micah Glenn: Sometimes, but at the same time I felt like I gained more opportunities leaving.  We had Edmond (Sumner), Mory (Diane), and Austin (Price) all coming in my sophomore year.  Plus Lee (Bailey), Chris (Fowler), and Reed (McManus) were still there.  So there wasn’t much room for guards.  I felt like my game expanded once I left.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics:  What schools have contacted or offered you?

Micah Glenn: I’m talking to Howard right now, bust mostly prep schools like Queen City Prep in North Carolina and Kingdom Prep in Iowa.  The beginning of the year I had reclassified to 2014 while at La Jolla Prep.  Looks from Northern Arizona, but after leaving and being back in 2013.  I’m probably gonna go prep.  That is where I feel I’ll have the best success.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Any prep schools going at you the hardest?

Micah Glenn: I’ve talked to Queen City the most.  One of my friends, Stevie Repichowski, went to Kingdom this season and is committed to Tulsa.  So I’m looking at them too.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What will a school be getting from a player like you?

Micah Glenn: A player that can hit shots off the dribble as well as spot up, a good passer and good defender.  Defense is what my coach has emphasized this season from day one, more than any other coach I’ve had.  It pushed me and will definitely be to my benefit at the next level.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Any favorites so far in recruiting so far?

Micah Glenn: Kingdom Prep is my favorite, but after I get my tapes to Howard and move forward in recruiting I’ll have a better understanding of where I’ll be next year.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Any shout outs you would like to give?

Micah Glenn: Yes, thanks to my coach Michael Mastroianni for what he’s done for me this past year, helped me on and off the court and I can’t thank him enough for that.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Lastly what is a interesting fact about you?

Micah Glenn: I collect sneakers.  I’m up to 40 right now and definitely not finished.

Interview with Jalon Plummer

3 Mar

Romulus wing man Jalon Plummer is the x factor for the Eagles this year.  Teams know about E.C. Matthews, Wes Clark, and Leo Edwards.  But the name that is forgotten is Plummer.  He has had multiple 20 point games this year.  Including 24 on the road against Country Day, and 25 earlier in the season against Chicago Seton Academy.  Jalon brings another shooter into the lineup for Romulus, as he contains one of the most prettiest three-point shots in the area.  Plummer is working on his ability to create offense for himself.  Might be going D1 if he did not sustaine a back injury last year which kept him out a significant portion of the season.  So far, many D2 GLIAC schools have showed interest in him.

Interview with Zak Noor

27 Feb

IMG_0983Zak has been averaging 15 points, five assists, 4 rebounds, and three steals this season.

Here is a link to his junior year highlights.

Zak Noor: 6’0″, 150 lbs, point guard.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Strengths you bring to a team?

Zak Noor: Strength, quickness, ball handle, penetrate to the rim very well.  Defense, shoot 3 pointer, and high IQ.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What are some things that you are working on as a ball player?

Zak Noor: Pull-up jump shots consistency more, and just getting better defensively always.  My pull-ups has been consistent this year though.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Besides from just skills, what else do you bring to the team?

Zak Noor: I have a good character.  I am a very hardworking and I’m coachable.  School I had a 3.6 last semester, and a 2.8 cumulative GPA.  I did bad but by the years I have improved.  ACT I got a 20.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What do you look for in a school from both a basketball and academic standpoint?

Zak Noor: For (academics) engineering or medical.  Don’t know which yet and also it doesn’t matter to me how big the size is but not to small.  Basketball, I look for a great coaching staff that will get me better and work me to the fullest and that will trust me.  Also a good facility to play in.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: So far, what schools have been contacting you?

Zak Noor: Albion, Adrian, I went to Wayne State for a game.  Denison, Concordia, Case Western.  But no offers.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Anything stand out to you about these schools/any relationships with any coaches or players at any of those schools?

Zak Noor: My old coaches out of high school played for Wayne State and Albion.  The coaches from Albion are really nice and like what I do and feel that I will help.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: When do you expect to receive some offers?

Zak Noor: Hopefully by the end of the season after I get my tape done from the season.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What is an interesting fact about you?

Zak Noor: I’m really funny and like math.

Interview with Lavail Russell

23 Feb

The sneaky quick sophomore guard Lavail Russell talks after his 22 point performance against Muskegon Heights

Interview with Jonathan Williams

23 Feb

IMG_0978

Toledo commit and Southfield-Lathrup star Jonathan Williams has almost every offensive talent to succeed at the nest level.  One of state’s elite combo guards, Jonathan is a pure scorer.  You must have one maybe even two guys guarding him.  Because if you don’t, he could drop 30 points.  Improving as an all around ball player as he states in the interview.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Height, weight, and position please?

Jonathan WilliamsMy height is 6’3″ 1/2, my weight is 190 lbs, my position is combo guard.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Thoughts on how the season has been going so far?

Jonathan Williams: As a whole, not too good.  We could’ve been much better but we are working on it everyday and looking forward to playing in the state tournament.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Best moments you have had this season?

Jonathan Williams: I would say playing in a hostile environment.  Like vs. Southfield High or Country Day or even Pontiac.  But the ultimate best moment I’ve had this season was the game winning pull-up vs. Troy.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What mark or impact do you think you are leaving on Lathrup being one if not the best players to come out of there?

Jonathan Williams: I would say that I’m leaving the mark as example that hard work and dedication pays off.  Everyone that knows me know that I work hard and have worked hard to get to the place that I’m at and still progressing.  Hard work makes me who I am.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: How tough would you say it is being one of the state’s top combo guards, but being on a struggling team?

Jonathan Williams: Real tough.  I would say its making me an all around better player because I’m forced to do thing other than score.  It’s making me a more mature person as well I think my game is growing playing with a struggling team, whether is looks like it or not.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What made you pick Toledo to continue your basketball career?

Jonathan Williams:  Toledo was the perfect fit for me.  I loved their facilities and the players and the coaching staff made me feel like family.  They showed the most love so I felt it was only right to go where I was comfortable.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What skills are you going to bring to Toledo to help the team?

Jonathan Williams: I think I can bring scoring and leadership.  Also I think can be a decent rebounder.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: Advice for you that are trying to become like you?

Jonathan Williams: To work hard on what is important to you everyday.  Keep a level head and stay humble.  And to give credit to God for blessing you and to others for helping you.

Metro Detroit High School Athletics: What and fun/interesting fact about you?

Jonathan Williams: I can bowl a little.  I eat a lot!  And I’m often considered to be a funny guy.

Consortium Coaches

22 Feb

Consortium coaches talk after the win against Robichaud.  The first game since the death of Coach Al Anderson.

Interview with Bakari Evelyn

18 Feb

Bakari, just a sophomore, is a state champion.  So he knows what the feeling is in March when you hoist the trophy into the air that says “Class D Champions.”  This year is no different for his Southfield Christian Eagles.  Bakari is capable of any night scoring twenty plus points, but at the same times is a ferocious defender.  Evelyn is a quick, but smart point guards who knows how to create scoring opportunities.  At times he might need to slow down a little bit and not try to take over the game.  Don’t be surprised if this kid becomes a national recruit before his senior year.

Interview with Vince Hunter

18 Feb

Vince Hunter is the heart and soul of the Consortium Cougars.  The senior is a high energy type of player who demands the best out of his team.  Hunter is a monster on the defensive end of the court.  He makes you think twice about putting the shot up.  Finishes above the rim.  UTEP will be getting a player who can make an impact right away next season.

Coach Wydell Henry of Pershing

18 Feb

Coach Henry in his first year at Pershing has deviated from Pershing’s strong tradition of basketball excellence.  His Doughboys are currently undefeated and sit number one in the State of Michigan.  He talks after his game in the PSL City Championship.
