PSL Finals Recap

King 45 vs. Cass Tech 38 (Girls)- The Crusaders of Martin Luther King won their second PSL Girls Basketball Championship out lasting Cass Tech in a tough hard-fought game.  The Technecians came out and surprised the entire city by only allowing King two points in the entire first quarter.  But in the third quarter is where King made their move.  Outscoring Cass 17-9 in the quarter.  In the fourth is where things got interesting.  Cass was able to cut into the lead by as much as six points at 34-28.  But were unable to get any closer.  LaQuita Heart had 16 points for King, and senior Antania Hayes had 11 and 14 rebounds.  Lauren Elliot had nine for Cass.

Pershing 80 vs. Cass Tech 61- Pershing needed to come out and make a statement after last year’s disappointing performance in the PSL Championship.  And they did just that.  Oakland commit Kahlil Felder nailed two-three pointers in the first two minutes of the contest setting the tempo for the rest of the game.  The Doughboys lead 37-26 at half thanks to a Martez Walker three-point shot as time expired to send the teams into over time.  In that second half, Pershing senior Lorenzo Collier  came out and set the tempo early scoring eight of his teams first 13 points in the quarter, a deficit Cass was never able to overcome giving Pershing their 3rd city title in five years.

Notes

Game 2: For Pershing, Collier and Justin Tillman finished up with 17 points.  While Martez Walker had 20 for the Doughboys.  This is Pershing’s first city title for coach Wydell Henry, who replaced A.W. Canada at the beginning of the season.  For Cass, it was D’Andre Johnson leading them in scoring with 13 points.  The senior seemed to have no support from his teammates, resulting in him trying to take the game over and pressing a little bit.  Kahlil Felder did not score many points, but you can tell that he is a big time player.  When the pressure is up on Pershing, that is where Felder steps his game up.  This is the one game, I have seen Pershing put together for foursolid quarters,  And not wait until the second half to make their run.

Update on D’Andre Johnson of Cass Tech

Interest: Florida Atlantic University.

Visits Upcoming: Florida Atlantic University next weekend.

New Offers: Florida Atlantic offered last week, also Lehigh has offered as well.

Favorites So Far: Florida Atlantic, Lehigh, and St. Bonaventure.

Decision: Right before the state playoffs.  What will go into his decision will not only be basketball, but what the coaching staff has turned players into after their basketball careers are over.

My Notes

D’Andre is a quick point guard who can create offense, period.  Not to many point guards have I seen who have his quick first step.  An absolute beast in transition.  As an up and coming jump shot, but when he is on, he is on.  Also I have to say one of the more toughest point guard defenders in the state.  Willing to take a charge or two.

Detroit PSL Semi-Finals Recap

Cass Tech 61 vs. Southeastern 60: There was no better ending to a basketball game than what happened at Cass Tech on Tuesday the 12th of February.  Trailing by double digits with a little over six minutes left in the game, most in the arena were ready to head to the parking lot.  But not SE.  Javon Haines single-handedly brought the Jungaleers back into the game, hitting a huge three at the mid-way point to cut the score to only 57-54.  Now here is how the ending went.  Cass Tech made a huge turnover with 26 seconds left in the game to give Southeastern the ball back.  SE missed the first shot on their possession, but junior Darryl Bigham was their for the put back with under 11 seconds to play.  With no timeouts remaining, Cass senior point guard D’Andre Johnson drove into the paint but was no good.  A following put back attempt by fellow senior Kyle Steward was good however, giving CT the win and sending them to Calihan Hall on Friday night.

Pershing 50 vs. Douglass 40: Similar to the earlier SE Cass game, a team attempted to make a comeback but was not to be.  Both teams struggled throughout the entire game to get into any offensive rhythm.  However, in the fourth is where things changed.  The score was 34-24 Pershing after three, but Douglass was able to make it 42-37 with 1:30 left in the contest.  But Douglass turned the ball over too much in that time span giving Pershing the hard-fought victory.

Notes

Game 1: Javon Haines might not be the tallest player on the court, but plays with huge amounts of passion.  The senior guard contributed 24 of his teams 60 points.  That is over a 1/3 of their total points!  He has the skills individually to create offense for himself at any time.  An absolute monster on the floor.  I have seen SE play many times this year, and sometimes he is the only one scoring.  I would say that he is a nice D2 prospect.  Daryl Bigham of the Jugaleers I could tell has made great strides throughout the entire season.  Against Cass he proved that he is a reliable forward who a team can dump the ball to in order to get points.  For Cass, D’Andre Johnson started of slow, but in the end finished with 19 hard earned points.

Game 2: The lone bright spot in this game for Fred D was the defensive performance was of junior Andre Frederick.  At times it looked like Pershing star junior Justin Tillman wanted no part of Andre.  Frederick has quick feet that makes him even a threat on the perimeter to block shots.  Has an improving offensive game, but defense wins championships.

Lake Orion 27 Cass Tech 34

The 2010 and 2011 MHSAA Division 1 State Championship winners squared off in a much-anticipated semi-final game this previous Saturday.  Cass Tech and Lake Orion, teams that were ranked high in the polls all year long, battled it out in a 2012 semi-final game that lived up to all the hype leading up to the game.  The Technicians of Cass Tech struck first on a 71 td reception from division 1 recruit Damon Webb following both teams going 3 and out on their first possessions.  The Dragons would not wait too long to respond.  In fact on the ensuing possession that is, senior running back Jacob Miller plowed in from 1 yard out to tie the game at 7 all.  The big play on the drive being a 57 yard reception from slotback Christopher Leigh.  The Technicians would re-take the lead on their next possession.  Michigan commit Jourdan Lewis returned the kickoff to the Lake Orion 21.  Setting up a sophomore running back Mike Weber for a 5 yard td.  Following another 3 and out for the Dragons, Cass would strike again.  Cass would score on a 8 yard td run from Jayru Campbell, but on this drive, Cass had to work for it.  Campbell completed a pass to Weber on 4-4 setting them up for the td.  Lake Orion’s next drive would stall again and they would be forced to punt.  Lewis was back at his goal line when he received the punt and raced for what appeared the be an electrifying 100 td return, only to brought back on a penalty.  Cass would do nothing on their drive giving the ball back to Lake Orion before half.  With under 10 seconds to play in the half, senior quarterback Derek Delaura would find fellow senior Chaz Miller going across the middle for a 10 yard td to put the Dragons down only 7 21-14 going into half-time.  Lake Orion and Cass would not do anything of their first possessions to start the 2nd.  But Lake Orion would tie the game up at 21 on their 2nd possession of the 3rd quarter.  Methodically passing the ball down the field, Delaura would find Jeremy Miller in the end-zone.  Cass would respond to the pressure with a td of their own.  Lewis would come up come up with 3 big receptions on the drive and one of them being a 29 td catch.  Never count out the Dragons, slotback Corey Ester would sprint to end-zone for a 71 run to again tie the game so it appeared.  The Dragons missed the pat which would’ve tied the game.  Cass’ next drive would take them all the way to the Lake Orion 4 set up by a 26 yard rush from Weber.  Cass would try to power the ball in but failed all three times.  Coach Wilcher called a fake field goal trying to catch Lake Orion napping, but the Dragons were ready, stuffing Campbell back behind the line of scrimmage.  Lake Orion desperate to get something going could not get a first down.  Finally on 4th down Coach Bell decided to go for it and failed.  Cass would take over on downs inside Lake Orion territory and Mike Weber went in from 10 yards out to seal the game.  Lake Orion would have one final drive but could not do anything.

Final Score: Cass Tech 34 Lake Orion 27

Notes

I was impressed with multiple things in this game from Cass.  Their passing game, Jayru Campbell was looking for that one game where he could say “I took it over.”  Campbell went 10-13 for almost 200 yards in the effort with 2 passing and 1 rushing td.  A great individual performance.

The running game.  Cass has averaged about 300 yards on the ground all year.  Recently Mike Weber has stepped in the playoffs.  He had over 100 yards in the 4th quarter.  A great sign for the green and white going into the championship game.

Finally the Defense.  The Cass defense really showed their toughness throughout the game. For the most part they held a very solid Lake Orion ground game.  Cass must do it again if they wish to beat Detroit Catholic Central, a team that loves to run the ball, in the championship.

This Weekends Games

After the first round of the MHSAA State Playoffs, only two teams remain from the PSL. Those teams are East English Village and Cass Tech. Last week,The Village beat Marysville, while the Technecians took out Grosse Pointe South. This week we move onto the District Championship. The Bulldogs will travel to St. Clair to play on Saturday at 7:00 PM, while Cass Tech will return for a home game to battle the Pioneers of Dearborn High on Saturday as well with a 1:00 PM kickoff. These two teams could very well end up at Ford Field playing for MHSAA State Championships. Please show your support for these two teams in their journey for greatness.

2012 MHSAA Playoff Teams from the PSL

Congratulations to all of the 2012 MHSAA State Playoff participants from the PSL.  A good majority of the teams selected from the DPS could very well end up playing at Ford Field for the State Championships.  Here are the six teams that qualified, their first round opponents and the start time for each game.

Cass Tech @ Grosse Pointe South (Friday 7:00 p.m.)

Cody @ Oak Park (Friday 6:00 p.m.)

King @ Southfield (Friday 4:30  p.m.)

Marysville @ East English Village (Friday 7:00 p.m.)

Central @ St. Clair (Saturday 7:00 p.m.)

Douglass @ Grosse Pointe University Ligget (Saturday 3:00 p.m.)

City Championship Game

Here it is, the biggest game in the PSL this season will be decided at the home field of the Detroit Lion, Ford Field.  Two teams coming off impressive wins last week at the City Semi-finals will decide the outcome of the City Championship.  The Crusaders of Martin Luther King, coming of a 41-13 beat-down over their rivals the Technicians of Cass Tech last week.  Quarterback Devaun Williams was involved in 6 touchdowns last week.  He was absolutely spectacular spreading the ball out to his playmakers.  Wr Mycial Allen had a nice showing on the offensive side of the ball while fellow senior James Alexander put in a nice performance on the defense.  On the other hand, East English escaped with a 37-32 victory over Cody last week.  I would be oblivious not to mention the performance senior Desmond King put in last week, three touchdowns.  Quarterback Anton Curtis was solid in the passing game, there is nothing more positive to say about the Bulldogs’ offense.  Now to game at hand, remember, King lost a 34-26 decision to these same Bulldogs in week two.  And to go back even farther than that, last season, King beat Crockett (where most of the East English Players played last year) only to lose in the City Championship to Crockett.  This game will be decided on the defensive side of the ball.  Both teams have explosive offenses, but defense wins championships.  Right now, I just don’t know if the Bulldogs can stop the offense King has.  The Bulldogs got destroyed last week in the running game, due to the scrambling ability of Cody Quarterback DeMarco Gulley.  Williams of King is not quite the scrambler Gulley is, but he possess the ability to run the ball when he needs to.  In the end, I like the Crusaders in this game.  A defense that held Cass Tech to 13 points, and an offense that I have said all year has playmakers.  King will hoist the City Championship this season, a truly remarkable story if they can accomplish it.

Please come and the PSL on friday, this will be probably the only chances for these young men to play on a stage this big, and it would a tragedy if no one is their to support them.  Tickets are $10 and gates open up at 6.  Please be there, this will truly be an event for all to enjoy.

Playoff Time in the City of Detroit

The Final weekend of high school football season in the state of Michigan is upon us.  Another great DPS Season will conclude with some teams wishing to have a couple of games back, while other will look to make deep state playoff runs.  The list below will tell what teams have qualified for the playoffs and what teams still need a win this weekend to qualify.

Central- At 5-3, the Trailblazers have certainly had a remarkable season.  They look to qualify for the playoffs on Thursday with a win over the visiting Trojans of Henry Ford.

Douglass- The Canes’ were expected to compete this season for the PSL East Division Championship.  But in the two games they needed to win, King and East English, Douglass did not even record a point.  The Hurricanes will not have a game this week and will finish with a 5-3 record.  Enough to make it into the playoffs.

King- King is in an interesting situation right now.  They play for the city championship this Friday, but with a record of 5-3.  King right now should be 6-2, but forfeited a game due to an ineligible player.  With a win King is in, but a loss still might get them in.  King has had to play a tough schedule, including Southfield and Cass Tech.  But no doubt, the Crusaders do not want to watch the MHSAA Selection Show this Sunday with anxiety about the remainder of their season.

East English- The Bulldogs have the best record out of any DPS Team.  If the bulldogs win this week, they will have  gone 8-1 on the season.  If that turns out to be true, the Bulldogs will have a great opportunity of obtaining home-field advantage in the playoffs, but for sure the district tournament.

Cass Tech- Cass Tech currently sits at 6-2 on the season.  The Technicians conclude regular season play against a very sub-par University of Detroit Jesuit.  Cass will most likely win and maybe even have a running clock in this game, which will give them a 7-2 record on the season.  Although this record seems good, it might not be good for home-field.  If Cass were to end up in the same district as Macomb Dakota, Dearborn Fordson or Warren Mott, they might only receive one home game.  That might not be a problem for the defending State Champions, remember last year, they got into the playoffs at 6-3 and only played one home game.

For all in all, it has been a truly great DPS Season.  Although their might not have been as many State Playoffs teams as their were last year, this season has been one of the most competitive in the years I’ve followed the PSL.

Detroit City Playoff Preview

Sorry for the delay, but today I will be giving you my 2012 Detroit Public School League City Playoff Semi-Final Preview. Unlike in years past, any team in this years playoff bracket can win the city championship. Two great games will be played at Northwestern High School with East English taking on Cody @ 5:00 and than the Crusaders of MLK will meet their bitter rivals, the Technicians of Cass Tech about half an hour after the conclusion of the first game. The preview for both games will follow:

East English Village vs. Cody

East English Village won the inaugural PSL East Division this year with a perfect record against the East. Cody was 2nd this year in the PSL West Regular Season Standings. These two are quite similar in many ways. Both teams play tough hard-nosed defense against their opponents. In fact, Cody last week shutout University Prep 55-0. The Bulldogs won last years’ city championship game when most of the players put on the Crockett uniform and bring a 6-1 record into this game, while the Comets carry a 5-2 record. Both teams love to run the ball. The Ville’ have running back Desmond King ,who is already a Ball State Commitment, pounding the ball. Cody’s offense is quite different from what I have seen in years past. They go with a spread look but rarely throw the ball. Even though it is predictable what they want to do, the opposition normally cannot stop them. Quarterback DeMarco Gulley is one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the city and excels in open space. However, when they do decide to throw the ball, the pass usually goes in the direction of speedster Eddie Fluker. Cody has a ton offense on the field who can put up points with the best of them, but I am not convinced that they can score against a top-tier defense. Against Cass Tech, they scored 20, but seven of those came on a Eddie Fluker kick-off return. I do expect Cody’s defense to be tough but I have go with the Bulldogs in this game who will look to repeat as city champs.

Martin Luther Kings vs. Cass Tech

Probably the best rivalry for football in the City of the Detroit adds a new chapter to its storied history as Cass will battle King for the right to play for the city crown. These two teams did not meet each other in the regular season, so the rivalry was in trouble of not being played this season. Lucky for us, King beat Denby last week securing a spot in the PSL Playoffs. The Crusaders will bring with them to Northwestern High School one of the most explosive offenses in the PSL. Senior quarterback DeVaun Williams will have multiple playmakers to get the ball to into this game. Wide-receiver Mycial Allen and Athlete Avonte Maddox are both being recruited by Big-Ten schools as we speak. Cass has looked mighty impressive this season with the exception of the loss to Orchard Lake St. Marys. Like King, Cass has playmakers on the offense as well. Jayru Campnell will be looking to win his first city championship to add to his State Championship he won last season. In my opinion, this game will come down who can control the line of scrimmage. Which ever team can control the line of scrimmage, get first-downs, and be in control of the game clock, will win this game. Cass has too much depth at the Offensive and Defensive lines for King. Which is why I pick Cass to win this game.
