U of D Outlasts East English Village 76-72 in Instant Classic

10 Dec

photo-3After trailing by as many as 19 points in the first half, the Detroit East English Bulldogs never relented.  From a 7-0 run heading into halftime down 12, to a 13-4 spurt to start the second half placing the Bulldogs only down three with five minutes left to go in the third stanza.  The next ten minutes went relatively even, until junior point guard Chris Rollins hit a corner three to knot the game at 64-64 with 4:50 left in the contest.

Unfortunately for East English, the Cubs made just too many plays down the stretch, led by junior Cassius Winston’s game high 33 points.  The aforementioned Rollins fouled out with 2:37 left in the contest with his team down just one possession.  Jesuit went on to shoot well over 80% from the foul line down the stretch in the fourth quarter, with Winston totaling a 16-17 performance at the charity on the night.

“We mean business this year,” were the words of Winston at the conclusion of the day.

This was Cassius’ second straight 30 point plus performance to start the year, the other on Monday’s victory over Chicago Morgan Park.

“I’m just trying to win games, that’s all that’s on my mind,” Winston said.  “Points, assists, what needs it that’s what going to happen.”

East English, the state’s pre-season’s 15 ranked team, also has their own stud junior, 6’3″ Kamari Newman, who added 16 of his points in “just a friendly battle” according to Winston.  The Village was led by 6’4″ junior forward Cedric Lattimore, whose 17 points in the second half ignited the EEVP comeback.  Lattimore finished with 28 points and seven rebounds, while Rollins finished with 14 points.

U of D improves to 2-0 on the young season, and will have six days to prepare for defending Class C state champion Detroit Consortium.  The Bulldogs fall to 0-1.  Up next for EEVP will be a date with Detroit Edison on December 13th at the Horatio Williams Tip-Off Classic.

Derrick Coleman Day 1 Action

9 Dec

The second annual Derrick Coleman showcase held at Detroit Mumford saw four games of Chicago Public Schools square off against four Detroit area teams.  Last year, Chicago went three and one on the day.  This year however, the script was flipped, Michigan went 3-1.  Here’s a look at the action from the victorious Detroit teams.

King Edges Out Harlan 55-54

Coach George Ward found himself in a tough one against Chicago Harlan in his Detroit King debut.  Tied 52-52 with under thirty to go, Rakeem Beal made 1/2 free-throws to give King a one point lead.  However, on the second, senior Armani Lee came away with one of his team high 10 rebounds to send teammate Jesse Scarber to the line for two more free-throws to put MLK up three.  On Harlan’s ensuing procession, senior Michael Johnson was fouled and granted three shots.  Johnson, the team’s leading scorer with 15 points made the first two, but missed the third.

Senior Armani Lee led King with 31 points and 11 rebounds, including ten in opening quarter of action.

Western Rolls Through Marshall Behind Neely and Tinsley

Detroit Western, the state’s pre-season number three ranked team in the state, had little trouble with Chicago Marshall.  The Cowboys jumped out to a 31-12 half-time advantage, and coasted to the 64-36 victory.

Senior transfers Gerald Blackshear and Josh McFolley were ineligible to play for Western per MHSAA policy.  Regardless, Western was still able to outplay a scrappy Marshall team that went 12-12 a year ago.  Junior point guard Brailen Neely paced Western with 19 points (3 3s), four steals, and 3 assists.  Fellow 11th grade backcourt mate Armani Tinsley chipped in with 14 points and 4 rebounds..  Tinsley was primarily a rotational player in 2013, but the added opportunity to start and play extensive minutes should bode well for the Cowboys depth as the season progresses.

U of D Makes Statement in Upset of Chicago Morgan Park

Morgan Park won last season at the very same Derrick Coleman Classic, 82-69 over Detroit Pershing.  This year, the Mustangs returned with one of the top players in 2015 Marcus LoVett, whose youtube highlights have amassed millions of views.  From the beginning of the contest, the Cubs went straight at LoVett holding him to only nine first half points, after coming into the day fresh off a 32 point performance.

The Cubs led from start to finish, and held a lead at one point in the fourth quarter as large as 18.  U of D also has their own star with as much notoriety as LoVett, junior point guard Cassius Winston.  Winston started  the game strong with 11 points and five rebounds in the opening quarter, nearly 1/3 of his game high 32 points while adding 10 overall rebounds.  Aside from Winston, senior guard Gary Collins added 10 points to go along with four steals, and was primarily assigned with the task to shadow LoVett throughout the majority of the game.  While junior guard Obe Duru scored 11 points off the bench, sophomores Donatus Eke and Greg Eboigboden made their highly anticipated high school debuts.  The two combined for nine points, and hauled down ten rebounds.

Charlie Moore paced Morgan Park with 26 points, while fellow junior Jamal Burton tallied 10 points.  LoVett finished with 17 points and 4 assists.

Pre-season Statewide Rankings (5-1)

7 Dec

The final set is here.

5. Romulus (Class A)- First year head coach Jerrett Smith won 21 games last season.  The Eagles only return one starter from 2013, however, the more things change at Romulus, the more they stay the same.  Romulus has a lineage of producing quality guards, and 6’3″ Jaylin Walker is no different.  The Kent State signee Walker is one of the state’s most electrifying athletes, his dunks have brought spectators to their feet at Romulus the past two seasons, and his senior year should be no different.  Walker is also a knockdown three-point shooter, which should pair well with the court vision 6’0″ junior point guard D’Angelo Hansbro, who will transition to the team’s starting point guard.  Other key guards for Romulus include 6’2″ Khaire Williams, 5’10” Sevann Williams, 6’0″ Martel Green, and 6’3″ Belleville transfer Rashaan Pope.  6’7″ senior forward Rio Washington will be relied on heavily this season, as not only the returning forward that played extensively, but more importantly, their tallest player.

4. University of Detroit Jesuit (Class A)- Last season was the first time in school history the Cubs reached the state-semifinals, and repeated as Catholic League champions.  U of D loses four starters from a year ago,  but return 6’1″ junior point guard Cassius Winston.  Not only is Winston one of the premier talents in Michigan, he’s also one of the most coveted recruits nationally in the current junior class, as he holds 9 division one college scholarships, including both in-state Big Ten schools Michigan and Michigan State.  Winston and the Cubs do however receive two new assets to the mix, in sophomore forwards Donatus Eke and  Greg Eboigboden, both stand 6’7″ plus and already have division one college interests.  Outside of Catholic League play, the Cubs have games scheduled vs. Morgan Park, East English Village, Consortium, Toledo St. Johns, Romulus, Milan, and Saginaw Arthur Hill

3. Muskegon (Class A)- The Big Reds won their first state title since the 1930s in 2013, and return 6’10” senior center Deyonta Davis.  The Michigan State signee is considered by various national recruiting services as a top fifty prospect in the class of 2015.  The only other returning starter for Muskegon is 6’3″ swingman Joeviair Kennedy, a dual sport star both on the hardwood and on the gridiron, who in his own right holds division one college basketball scholarships.

2. Detroit Western (Class A)- The Western of December will look entirely different of the Cowboys of February and March, as Mt. Clemens transfer and U of D Mercy commits Josh McFolley and Gerald Blackshear settle in with their teammates and one of the state’s top prep coaches in Derrick McDowell.  McFolley is a three-point specialist, but improved on his complete point guards skills over the Summer in AAU, while the 6’8″ Blackshear will add even more size to an already talented front court with 6’8″ plus senior forwards Julius Palmer and Kheir Maxwell.  The junior class is also loaded on talent, as 5’10” Brailen Neely, 5’9″ Armani Tinsley, 6’2″ Kareem Murray, and 6’2″ Efrian Hodby will all provide quality depth for the Cowboys.

1. Saginaw Arthur Hill (Class A)- Eric Davis returns to Arthur Hill for his senior season, the 6’4″ guard Texas Longhorn commit averaged 27 points as a junior in another solid season of Lumber Jacks basketball.  Not only does the Hill have Davis, 6’6″ Brian Bowen is the number one player in Michigan’s sophomore class but also a top ten prospect nationally.  Role players for Arthur Hill will be sophomore 6’4″ forward Will Rodgers, 5’10” junior point guard Nate Moore and 6’5″ senior Dequavion Johnson.  Arthur Hill will look to win a district title for the first time in four years, as cross-town rival Saginaw has ended the Lumberjacks season the past three seasons.

Pre-season Statewide Rankings (10-6)

7 Dec

Number one is getting closer.

10. Oak Park (Class A)- The Knights received an early Christmas present, as 6’7″ senior forward Rodney Scales has returned after playing football at Neenah High School in Wisconsin just in time to rejoin his team for the start of the season.  Scales is reported to be immediately eligible, meaning the one-two punch of him and 6’7″ junior Kelvon Fuller is back on to terrorize opposing front courts.  In the backcourt, Oak Park has two high-scoring guards in junior Devin Mills and senior Howard McInnis, both just need to see one go through the net before heating up quickly.  Mills will be eligible in January.

9. Wayland Union (Class B)- Wayland fell to eventual Class B state champion Milan in the quarterfinals.  6’7″ senior LJ James is back for his senior season.  As a junior, James averaged 14 point and nine rebounds a game, and will pair with fellow senior Dilon Aten, a 6’1″ point guard and Cornerstone (MI) commit who averaged 18 a year ago, to give Wildcats a dynamic offensive attack.

8. Kalamazoo Central (Class A)- The Maroon Giants won 20 games a year ago, and received the talents of junior 6’5″ guard Devon Daniels via Battle Creek Central over the off-season.  While Devon will handle most of the scoring loading this season, 6’7″  Isaiah Livers should give Central quality minutes in the paint as a rebounder and scorer around the rim.  Junior Orlando Little gets the most out of his 6’4″ frame, and is never short on hustle and grit, and 6’5″ sophomore wing Ontario Burnett will provide perimeter shooting to round out a balanced Maroon Giant offensive attack.

7. Ypsilanti Lincoln (Class A)- Lincoln loses only one senior off last year’s 14-7 team.  The Rail Splitters will be led by junior division one recruits junior Ty Groce and senior Devin Haygood.  Haygood is a 6’8″ forward that excels in crashing the boards and defending the rim, while the 6’7″ Groce will add versatility and potential to become a lockdown perimeter defender.  The Rails also return their leading scorer from a year ago in 5’9″ senior floor general Sherrod Motley-Dismuke (10 points), and standout football prospect Lazon Hicks.  Groce, Haygood, and Hicks all averaged nine points per game last year, while Hicks was the teams’ leading rebounder with six boards per-contest.

6. Milan (Class B)- Milan won Class B a year ago, and return their three leading scorers in seniors Nick Perkins, Latin Davis, and Lance Lewis.  However, the biggest loss of the off-season was head coach Josh Tropea, who accepted the head coaching position at Chelsea.  Chris Pope will succeed Tropea, and aside from Monroe St. Mary in the Huron League, the Big Reds have schedule games against Ypsilanti Lincoln, Adrian Lenawee Christian, Romulus, and U of D Jesuit.
