Derrick Walton, a commit to Michigan, has all the tools to be an elite point guard. Today, and especially in the NBA, point guards are guys who look to score first and pass second. But Derrick is a combination of both, he can both make sweet dimes to the open man, or take over the game in crunch time. Trey Burke will most likely leave Michigan for the NBA Draft this year, so with that said, you have no need to fear fans of the Maize & Blue. Interview with Coach Nichols of Renaissance
2 JanCoach Nichols is the head coach at Renaissance High School who throughout most of the season so far, has had to deal with coaching a young and inexperience team compared to what he is used to coaching. He talks after a big win over previously undefeated Inkster team at the Motor City Roundball Classic.
Interview with Pontiac’s Dijon Cogdill
1 JanDijon Cogdill is the point guard for Pontiac High School. Do not let his size fool you. The kid can play. And when he is in the zone, he is really on. He went 7-13 from three point land. Yes that is right. 21 of his 27 total points against Schoolcraft were on threes. He also dished out five assists in the game, while taking the game MVP. He is one of those players that can make a major impact in the correct system.
Interview with Tim Coleman of Cincinnati Withrow
1 JanTim Coleman is one of those lefty guards that just seems to know how to handle the ball. Put him in a pick-and-roll situation and he can absolutely kill a defense. He scored 31 points against a pretty good Canton team, including 3-9 from three point land. If he does not get looked at by D-1 schools that would be a crime.
Interview with Oak Park’s Stephon Williams
1 JanStephon Williams is a wing guard for the Oak Park Knights who won the MVP at the Motor City Roundball Classic. Stephon did not have his best game at the Classic. However, he has shown the ability to put the ball in hole multiple times. He did so earlier this season scoring 29 against Lathrup in mid December. He is not just a scorer, he also showed the ability for a guard to rebound the ball against Lincoln.
Interview with Renaissance’s Clark Bishop
1 JanClark is one of those gifted offensive players that you don’t see quite often. His skill sets include ball handling, athleticism, jump shot, three point, and one-on-one moves. There is nothing this kid can’t do with the ball in his hand.
Interview with Andre Frederick
1 JanFrederick is a 6’7″ center for the Frederick Douglass Hurricanes. Only a junior, Andre right now has the ability to take over the defensive side of the court with rebounds, not to mention his blocking shots ability.
Motor City Roundball Day Five Recap
1 JanSouthfield 72 vs. Ecorse 54– The Bluejays can jump on you in a hurry. Ecorse only trailed by six after one, but within the next couple of minutes in the second, they were done by double digits. And the lead only got bigger during the third quarter when with 5:15 left, it was 42-23 Bluejays. I am telling, college coaches, fans, anybody, Jeff Greer the point guard for Southfield, he can play. Do not let his size fool you. He is like Earl Boykins out there. He has the handles, quickness, and the shot to compete at the next level.
Southfield Lathrup 73 vs. Detroit Loyola 88– Yes Loyola is a basketball school to go along with their division seven state final appearance on the football field. Lathrup has one of the best scorers/shooters in Michigan if not the midwest in Jonathan Williams. He can absolutely provide instant offense for a team. Toledo will learn that next year. But the supporting cast was not there for him. Williams did finish up with 36, but Loyola Richie Gold took the MVP, scoring 26 points, while grabbing nine rebounds.
Consortium 63 vs. Chicago Hyde Park 60– Consortium just might be the most athletic team in Class C. Josh Jackson and Vince Hunter remind me of the twin towers the Houston Rockets used to have. However, Jackson is a completely different player. He brought the ball up the floor a couple of times as point guard, showing that he is truly a versatile player. Vince Hunter took home the MVP for Consortium scoring 26, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out three assists for the UTEP commit. I am just saying, watch out Beecher, you may just have to beat Consortium to defend your trophy.
Chicago Orr 46 vs. Detroit Community 34– Community came out of a dogfight earlier this week after coming up short on Thursday against Pershing. Orr really took control of this game in first quarter as they took a 17-4 lead after one and sailed to the finish line. Louis Adams won the MVP trophy for Orr with 14 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Orr will surprise some people this year is the Chicago Public School League.
Walled Lake Western 66 vs. Detroit Country Day 70– The final game of the 18th annual Motor City Roundball Classic proved to be the best. Walled Lake Western, led by big man Miroslav Jaksic, actually held the lead with under 20 seconds left to play in the ball game. But DCD tied it up with under ten seconds to play sending the game into overtime. This is where Country Day woke up from their slumber, they jumped out on a six nothing run and never looked back. Christien Wright took the MVP with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jr. guard Edmund Sumner added 14, while Lehigh bound Austin Price contributed 17 points and eight total boards.
This classic could not have been held if it was not for the great people that run it. There is a reason this classic is been around for 18 years.
